Kristine Tumanyan (1992, Armenia)

Born in Gyumri (Գյումրի), raised in Sochi, based in Heerlen.

For Kristine Tumanyan, drawing is a practice of presence, a way of slowing down, concentrating, and becoming fully attentive to the experience of the present moment. Her work emerges from the belief that drawing is not only about creating an image, but also about experiencing movement, time, intuition, sound, and the physical act of making.

Tumanyan seeks a balance between powerful expression and precise control. Beginning with a single line, each composition develops intuitively. She follows the line as it unfolds, adjusting its direction, pressure, rhythm, and gesture according to what is happening in the moment. Fragile lines and broad brushstrokes come together to create an intense and organic visual language.

For her, concentration does not mean controlling the outcome, but remaining open to what emerges. Lines connect, overlap, disappear, and continue, making the continuity of the process visible. The resulting compositions hold both freedom and discipline, spontaneity and attention.

Tumanyan primarily works on paper, using calligraphic tools, East Indian ink, and wine ink. She also creates performance art and site-specific drawings.

In de monumentale Dominicanenkerk in Maastricht presenteert Kristine Tumanyan haar tentoonstelling Expression [balance] Control.

Met werken die balanceren tussen krachtige expressie en meditatieve precisie onderzoekt kunstenares de spanning tussen controle en loslaten.
